Specialist Qualifications

Dr Watts is the only registered specialist in Reproduction – Small Animal in Victoria. He has postgraduate qualifications (PhD) for which he studied uterine function and dysfunction in bitches and is a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Reproduction.

In November 2004, Dr Watts obtained diplomate status of The European College of Animal Reproduction by examination in Europe.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Dr Watts studied full-time for a PhD on uterine function and dysfunction in bitches from February 1994 until December 1997. The studies significantly improved scientific knowledge in this area. The work included the development of novel techniques which have enabled many new findings. They included:

The development of the first method of transcervical uterine cannulation which enables samples to be collected from the uterus for cytology and microbiology

The first report on uterine microbes of normal bitches throughout the reproductive cycle with sampling using transcervical uterine cannulation

The first report of endometrial cells from normal bitches throughout the reproductive cycle

The first study on the application of transcervical uterine cannulation, endometrial cytology and uterine microbiology in the diagnosis of uterine disease

The first study comparing endometrial and vaginal cytology in the diagnosis of mis-mating using transcervical uterine cannulation.

The first report of populations of endometrial leucocytes throughout the reproductive cycle using conventional and immunohistochemical methods

The first studies on the effects of administering a prostaglandin F2a analogue to bitches at a continuous low dosage on luteal function and cardinal signs, and on the polydipsia induced by the treatment

The first study on the effect of shortening the luteal phase on endometrial exfoliation and leucocytes during anoestrus in bitches
